In 2006 - Commonwealth Journal Wins Top Associated Press Broadcasters Award for Sixth Year in a Row!

 

 

Commonwealth Journal, WUMB-FM's public affairs interview program hosted by author Barbara Neely, won First Place in Public Affairs from the Associated Press of Massachusetts & Rhode Island for programming produced in 2005. Neely's weekly interviews with people whose lives and work impact the Bay State is carried on 19 Massachusetts radio stations, in addition to WUMB.
For the sixth year in a row, the program received a first place award in Public Affairs from the Associated Press of Massachusetts and Rhode Island; the eighth award from the AP. The 2006 recognition was awarded for a segment entitled "Cultural Stereotypes and Health" which aired in 2005. Barbara Neely interviewed local physician Chidi Achebe, MD (son of Nigerian author, Chinua Achebe) on how cultural stereotypes can effect quality of health care. Dr. Achebe has been noted for his service as medical director of Boston's Whittier Street Health Center and for his social activism promoting health care for all.
